Figure 7.2 — Deterministic randomness. A microscopic particle (large circle) immersed in a fluid undergoes continuous collisions with the fluid molecules (dots on the left). The resulting motion (on the right, obtained from a molecular dynamics simulation), despite being deterministic, appears to be random, especially if we do not have access to the exact positions and velocities of the fluid molecules.
